This is the tech I actually use or have tried myself: the laptops I write code on, the accessories that make them nicer to work with, the gear that keeps my phone going and the cameras I take along when I am away from the desk. Each pick has a short note on why it earned a place here. The list grows as I try new things.

Laptops

Apple MacBook Neo 13″ (A18 Pro, 8GB, 256GB)

The most affordable way into a Mac. The A18 Pro chip and 8GB of unified memory handle browsing, writing, light coding and Apple Intelligence features, and the 13-inch Liquid Retina display keeps it easy to carry around. Pick this for everyday work rather than heavy builds.

Apple MacBook Pro 14.2″ (M6, 1TB)

The one to get if the laptop is your main work machine. The M6 chip gets through large builds, containers and video exports without fuss, and 1TB of storage leaves room for projects, simulators and media libraries.

Laptop accessories

SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD

A small, rugged SSD that survives life in a bag, with IP65 dust and water resistance and 3m drop protection. Around 1,000MB/s read and write is quick enough for backups and moving project files, it works with Type-C phones as well as laptops, and it has a 5-year warranty.

Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD

Similar speed to the SanDisk at up to 1,050MB/s, in a rubberised IP65 body. A good fit for photographers and anyone offloading camera footage to a laptop while travelling.

Samsung T9 1TB Portable SSD

Up to 2,000MB/s read, about twice the T7, for editing video or working with large files straight off the drive. Full speed needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port, which many laptops (Macs included) do not have, so check your ports before paying extra for it.

Seagate FireCuda X Vault 8TB External HDD

Bulk storage rather than speed: 8TB over USB-C holds years of photos, footage and backups for far less per terabyte than an SSD. It also comes with Seagate Rescue data recovery services.

DJI Osmo Action 4 Adventure Combo

If you do not need the newest model, the Action 4 still holds up well. Its large 1/1.3-inch sensor copes with low light, and it is waterproof without a separate case.
